And when the mother died, Ethan’s decent and empathetic nature led him to marry Zenobia, who was a cousin of his mother’s and who had helped nurse her. When the father died, he cared for his ailing mother. Since he was a young adult, Ethan has cared for his ailing father. Most of the book happens when 28-year-old Ethan is living with his 35-year-old wife, Zenobia. ![]() ![]() “You’ve had an awful mean time, Ethan Frome,” one town resident tells the eponymous character, and that is the truth. When Edith Wharton wrote it in 1911, reviewers called it “gruesome,” with another saying, “We wish we had not read it.” I guess that just goes to show there’s a book out there for everyone - well, that - and, don’t put too much stock in my recommendations □ “Ethan Frome” isn’t a cheery read by any means. I’ve read it at least twice, but the overwhelming feeling of winter in the book led me to treat myself to another reading recently. If “Jane Eyre” was the favorite book of my young adulthood, “Ethan Frome” fills that role at this point in my life. ![]()
